Bernedoodle Coat Colors: What Makes This Breed So Striking?

When you first lay eyes on a Bernedoodle, it’s not just their affectionate personality or teddy bear looks that win hearts — it’s the stunning variety of coat colors they come in. From rich tricolors to rare merles, Bernedoodles are as visually captivating as they are loving.

Whether you’re a first-time doodle parent or expanding your pack, understanding coat genetics and expectations can help you choose the right fit for your family, and set proper grooming expectations too.

Why Bernedoodles Are a Canvas of Color

Bernedoodles are a mix of the affectionate Bernese Mountain Dog and the intelligent Poodle. While the Poodle brings hypoallergenic texture and tight curls, the Bernese contributes classic tricolor patterns and that signature big-hearted temperament.

The result? A palette of coat styles that go far beyond the standard.

Most Popular Bernedoodle Coat Types

Tricolor (Black, White & Rust)
The most iconic and beloved variation, these pups resemble their Bernese parent, black base with white accents and warm rust points. They often have a symmetrical blaze on the face and a white chest.

Bicolor (Black & White or Brown & White)
A classic, clean contrast. These coats may appear tuxedo-style or with large patches. Ideal for those who love Bernedoodle charm with lower grooming needs.

Phantom
Similar to tricolor, but without the white. Typically black with tan points above the eyes, chest, and legs. Phantom Bernedoodles are especially eye-catching and resemble Dobermans in coloration, just fluffier.

Merle (Blue or Chocolate)
Merle patterns mix base colors with lighter speckling or marbling, think blue-gray or cocoa backgrounds with contrasting splotches. These pups often have unique eye colors, sometimes even one of each!

Sable & Brindle
These dynamic coats can shift as your puppy grows. Sables usually have darker tips over lighter undercoats, while brindles appear as tiger-like stripes, both are rarer and often come with silky waves.

What Affects Coat Color?

While genetics plays the biggest role, a few other things can influence a Bernedoodle’s final look:

  • Maturity: Many coats fade, shift, or deepen as your pup grows up.
  • Generation: F1, F1b, and multigen crosses can all express coat color differently depending on how much Poodle or Bernese influence is present.
  • Sun Exposure: Just like human hair, UV exposure can lighten dark coats over time.

Does Coat Color Affect Temperament or Health?

In short, no. A puppy’s personality and overall health depend on breeding practices and early socialization, not the color of their coat. That’s why working with an experienced, transparent breeder is key.

While some colors and textures might shed more than others, Bernedoodles are often sought after for their low-shedding, allergy-friendly coats — a trait they inherit from their Poodle lineage

At Much Ado About Doodles, every puppy — regardless of color — is raised on our farm with care, structure, and hands-on attention from birth.

Color Isn’t Everything — But It Sure Is Fun!

While choosing a Bernedoodle based on personality and lifestyle fit is always the top priority, it’s okay to swoon over a certain look. With their charming features and wide range of coats, Bernedoodles make it easy to fall in love at first sight.

It’s important to note that our team at Much Ado About Doodles currently offer only mini Bernedoodles and are not featuring this breed with merle coats yet. More to come as we add these dashing doodles to our family!
